The Prized Delight: Exploring Kurma Mabroom in Malaysia

Buah kurma

Kurma Mabroom sits in an awkward spot on a Malaysian shop shelf. Plenty of customers know Ajwa and Medjool by name, but far fewer can say what Mabroom is. If you run a grocery, a gift shop or a catering business and you are thinking of stocking it, these are the questions that come up first. For retail packs, see the Kurma Mabroom Malaysia listing.

Where does Mabroom come from?

The Madinah region of Saudi Arabia. Malaysia has no commercial date orchards, so the Mabroom on your shelf was imported like every other date beside it. Your distributor's carton should name the variety and give Saudi Arabia as the origin. Keep that wording on anything you repack.

How do I describe it to a customer?

Stick to what you can stand behind. Mabroom is long and slender, reddish-brown, semi-dry and chewy. That is enough for someone to choose. A customer who wants a date with some chew has a reason to pick it. One who wants something very soft will probably be happier with Medjool, which is large and very soft with a caramel taste.

Don't tell anyone that a colour or taste proves the dates are genuine. Those tests aren't reliable. Point to the label instead.

Who actually buys it?

Mostly people shopping for an occasion. Ramadan is the big one, with Hari Raya close behind. Wedding hantaran, kenduri and umrah door gifts keep orders coming at other times of the year. A semi-dry date is less sticky to handle than a soft one, which helps when staff are laying out hantaran trays or filling gift boxes by hand.

What should sit next to it?

Give customers something to compare. Mabroom, Safawi and Ajwa make an easy Saudi trio: Safawi is longer than Ajwa, dark brown to black, soft and chewy, while Ajwa is small, roundish and near-black. Side by side, the three look clearly different. Our page on Kurma Safawi in Malaysia covers that one in more detail.

If you also carry soft rotab such as Mazafati, that needs a chiller. Mabroom can stay on an ordinary shelf in a cool part of the shop, out of direct sun. For the difference between the soft rutab stage and the drier tamr stage, read fresh vs dried kurma.

When should I reorder?

Earlier than feels necessary. Gulf dates are mostly harvested between late summer and autumn and reach Malaysia some weeks later, and every shop in the country wants stock in the run-up to Ramadan. Book your Ramadan quantity well ahead and ask for variety, origin and grade to be confirmed in writing.

Grades like A, AA or Jumbo are each importer's own sorting, so compare price per kilo and net weight rather than the grade name. How distributors fit between importer and shop is explained in the role of dates distributors in Malaysia.

Is it worth selling online?

Yes, especially as part of a mixed box. Before festive visits a lot of shoppers go online to find beautifully arranged platters of dates, and a tray with three Saudi varieties gives them more to look at than one. List the net weight and each variety's origin in the description. If you want to add Mabroom to your range, contact our distribution team with the quantity you have in mind.
