A pill that takes fat off while you sit still is the promise in the title. Before asking whether such a pill exists, it helps to ask what "fat loss" means, because a scale gives one number for the whole body. Trials that measure body composition split that number into fat mass and lean mass, and a plan can lower one while costing you the other.
What the pills have shown so far
A 2021 systematic review by Batsis and colleagues (PubMed 34159755) screened 20,504 citations on supplements and alternative therapies for weight loss. It found 315 randomised trials covering 14 kinds of product. Only 52 of those trials were rated low risk of bias with enough data to judge, and only 16 of the 52 found a significant difference in weight between groups. The range was 0.3 to 4.93 kg. The authors call the evidence base "limited" and say these products are sold as a panacea "as a result of the minimal regulatory requirements in demonstrating efficacy".
Notice what the review summarised: weight. Some of the trials also tracked body fat, but the 0.3 to 4.93 kg range is a change in weight, and a kilogram on the scale says nothing about whether it was fat.
Weight and fat are different numbers
The trials that tracked body composition tell a more useful story. Lopez and colleagues (PubMed 35191588, 2022) pooled 114 randomised trials with 4,184 people living with overweight or obesity. Programmes that combined resistance training with eating fewer calories cut whole-body fat by 5.3 kg on average compared with groups given nothing, and lean mass held steady (a change of about −0.3 kg that was not statistically significant). Resistance training on its own added about 0.8 kg of lean mass.
Put the two reviews side by side. The best supplement trials moved the scale by up to 4.93 kg, and the review reports that as weight, not fat. Lifting plus a smaller plate took off 5.3 kg of fat and left muscle in place.
How hard to cut
Eating far less is tempting when you want quick results. A 2022 meta-analysis by Murphy and Koehler (PubMed 34623696) looked at resistance training done during an energy deficit lasting three weeks or more. Strength still improved, but gains in lean mass were held back, and the meta-regression found that a deficit of about 500 kcal a day prevented lean mass gains. The authors advise people trying to keep muscle while losing weight to avoid deficits larger than 500 kcal a day.
So a modest cut, held for longer, protects the part of your weight you want to keep.
The strength part, in plain terms
The NHS guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64 ask for strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on at least 2 days a week, on top of at least 150 minutes of moderate activity (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity) a week. Their list of muscle-strengthening activities is ordinary: carrying heavy shopping bags, yoga, lifting weights, resistance bands, push-ups and sit-ups, heavy gardening such as digging. The NHS says to do them to the point where you need a short rest before repeating. It also says to speak to your GP first if you have not exercised for some time or have medical concerns.
None of that comes in a bottle.
Where dates sit on a fat-loss plate
Dates are food, not a pill, and this article makes no claim that they burn fat. What they bring is fibre with their sugar. USDA FoodData Central lists Deglet Noor dates (record 171726) at 282 kcal and 8.0 g of fibre per 100 g, so a 30 g portion works out to roughly 85 kcal and 2.4 g of fibre. The NHS calls a food high in fibre when it has 6 g or more per 100 g, and it says adults should aim for 30 g of fibre a day while most manage about 20 g.
The NHS counts 30 g of dried fruit as one of your 5 A Day, with one condition: dried fruit should be eaten at mealtimes, not as a between-meal snack, to reduce the risk of tooth decay. Chopped into breakfast oats or eaten after lunch, a 30 g portion follows that advice. A handful nibbled through the afternoon does not.
